大学生になり本を読む機会が減っていると感じています。そこで普段本を読まない新聞会企画班のメンバーが読書をして理科大生に本を紹介しようという企画です。人それぞれの違った本への感じ方を共有できたらいいなと思います
選んだ理由
坂口安吾の「堕落論」(1946年4月1日)と「続堕落論」(1946年12月1日)を読んだのは、実をいうとこれが初めてではありません。それでもこれらを選んだのは、あまりに印象が鮮烈だったのでこの機会に読み返して自分なりの考えをまとめたいという思いがあったからです。
どんな作品？
坂口安吾は第二次世界大戦終了直後から活躍した文豪です。面白い小説も多く残していますが（夜長姫と耳男なんかが好きです）、随筆や評論が特に評価されている人物です。「堕落論」と「続堕落論」はそんな安吾による代表的な作品で、戦中・戦後を東京で過ごした安吾の実感に基づく議論が展開され、短編ながら安吾の戦争論・文化論・日本人論・天皇論・人間論などのエッセンスが詰まった非常に知的で刺激的な作品です。
何がどう面白いのか
理性的で感情な文体
坂口安吾本人は極めて理性的な思考の持ち主なのだと思います。そのため社会をある意味冷めた、客観的な視点で眺めることができたのです。
しかし、この作品において安吾の主張は常に感情豊かに述べられています。飲みの席で徐々に感情を高ぶらせながら社会についてあれこれ述べている姿が目に浮かぶような緩急のある文体なのです。
この極めて理性的でありながら感情にまかせて書いているかのような文章は、淡々とした論理のビートと自由な心のリズムが見事に合わさってまるでイケてる音楽のようなグルーブ感を生み出し、読んでいるだけで脳に心地よい刺激をもたらしてくれること請け合いです。
ボタン一つ押し、ハンドルを廻すだけですむことを、一日中エイエイ苦労して、汗の結晶だの勤労のよろこびなどと、馬鹿げた話である。しかも日本全体が、日本の根柢そのものが、かくの如く馬鹿げきっているのだ。－続堕落論
戦中・戦後の日本を見つめる独自の眼
安吾の作品には小説・評論問わず戦時中の経験を描いたものが多いです。「堕落論」は終戦の翌年に発表された作品ですが、これは安吾の出世作となったものの１つに数えられます。安吾の視点で描かれる戦争が当時の日本人にとって目新しいものだったのか、なじみぶかいものだったのかは分かりませんが、何か感じるものがあったのは間違いないと思います。
だが、堕落ということの驚くべき平凡さや平凡な当然さに比べると、あのすさまじい偉大な破壊の愛情や運命に従順な人間達の美しさも、泡沫のような虚しい幻影にすぎないという気持がする。ー堕落論
「日本人の二面性」を鮮やかに解剖
私がはじめて堕落論を読んだときに感じた鮮烈な印象は、大きくここに起因するもののように思われます。
あなたは「日本人って○○だよね」というような表現を口にしたり聞いたりすることはないでしょうか。あるいは映画や漫画の中に「古風な日本人」とか「現代の典型的な日本人」といったものを見出すことはないでしょうか。おそらく心当たりがあると思います。
ではその中に矛盾を感じたことはないでしょうか？私はたくさんありました。日本人は義理堅いが薄情、勤勉だが怠け者、勇敢だが臆病。これらは、もちろん１つ１つが絶対的なものではまったくありませんが、どこかでそういう風に感じたり、そういう風に描かれているものを見たりすることがあるのではないかと思います。
「堕落論」「続堕落論」の中で安吾はこのモヤモヤを鮮やかに言語化し、明快に論評しています。さらにそこから日本の歴史や政治に通った一本の筋を示してみせるのです。
